How to Use the New Year to Launch Your Health Coaching Career

How to Use the New Year to Launch Your Health Coaching Career  Seasonality shapes nearly every profession and health coaching is no exception. Farmers plan their entire year around growing seasons. Accountants feel the intensity of tax season. Retailers depend on the holiday rush.  In the health and wellness industry, the New Year is our most significant season. For those who want to become a health coach, January provides both momentum and clarity. You have an immediate opportunity to work with clients who are highly motivated, curious, and ready to commit. When you start during this annual rise in interest, you give yourself an early advantage in building confidence, gaining practical experience, and creating the foundation for a sustainable health coaching business.  Who Doesn’t Love a Fresh Start?  Every New Year, something remarkable happens. People look at their lives with a rare mix of hope, urgency, and honesty. They ask themselves what they truly want from their health, their daily habits, and their long-term wellbeing. Fitness centers swell with new members, grocery carts fill with vegetables and meal prep containers, and conversations across kitchen tables shift toward goals. In this window of motivation and momentum, a health coach has an opportunity unlike any other time of the year.  There is no better time to launch a career in health coaching than the beginning of the year. People are primed for change and they actively seek guidance from professionals who can help them translate that fresh motivation into sustainable growth.  The New Year brings reflection and a renewed sense of possibility. People begin asking different questions about their health, their routines, and their wellbeing. This shift creates a unique opening for health coaches to do what they are trained to do, which is to support individuals in becoming the healthiest version of themselves.  When someone decides that this is the year they will get stronger, improve sleep, manage stress more intentionally, or cultivate a healthier relationship with food, they are already halfway toward seeking a partner who can guide them through the challenging middle. The surge in interest gives aspiring coaches the perfect landscape to begin, because the audience that needs their support is already paying attention.  The Problem with Resolutions  When someone starts working with a coach in January, they might be trying to rewrite patterns that have lingered for months or years. They may be stepping into January with genuine hope that this time will be different. When you step into that moment with skill and compassion, you show them how consistent guidance can transform fragile resolutions into long lasting habits.  Health related resolutions are consistently among the most common commitments people make at the start of the year, yet many lose momentum quickly. This gap between intention and reality is not a sign that people lack strength or discipline. It is a sign that self-directed change becomes significantly more difficult without support.  “As health coaches, we know all about the data. We know that health-related goals are by far the most popular New Year’s resolutions,” says Shana Walsh, PhD, NBC-HWC, MCHES. “We also know that by Spring, more than 80% of resolutions fail. That failure is a massive signal that people need exactly the type of support that we offer. Our job is to catch those highly motivated people before they fall, and use our tools to help them succeed instead.”  If you are building a career as a health coach or exploring how to start a health and wellness coaching business, understanding this rhythm of motivation and struggle is essential. The New Year gives you the chance to step into that support role exactly when people need it most.  Turning New Year Momentum Into a Real Health Coaching Business  This seasonal momentum does more than energize potential clients. It also creates an ideal environment for aspiring coaches. The same energy that inspires personal resolutions can be used to build the foundation of a new business.  Once someone decides to become a health coach, the next step involves building a business that is focused, structured, and aligned with the clients they hope to serve.  January may be the perfect time to start, but momentum alone is not enough.  You need a plan that helps you step confidently into the role of health coach entrepreneur. A strong health coach business plan includes clarity about who you serve, how you support them, and how you will present your work to the world.  Below are the practical building blocks new coaches can put in place during the New Year to launch a sustainable and successful business.  Define Your Niche Before You Build Anything Else  One of the most misunderstood parts of becoming a health coach is the belief that casting a wide net will bring more clients. In reality, clarity attracts. A well-defined niche helps potential clients immediately recognize that you understand their specific challenges and can offer tailored solutions.  Whether you feel drawn to stress reduction, women’s health, digestive wellness, athletic performance, family nutrition, or another specialty, choosing a niche gives your business a unique identity. It also makes your marketing efforts far more efficient. When you know exactly whom you are speaking to, it becomes easier to create content, services, programs, and branding that resonate.  This is also the step where many coaches begin to feel their confidence rise. They shift from “I want to help everyone” to “I help this type of person with this type of challenge through this type of method.” That level of clarity lays the groundwork for every decision you make afterward.  Learn how to choose the best niche for your health and wellness coaching business.  Develop a Coaching Framework You Can Deliver Consistently  Clients do not just buy sessions. They buy transformation. To deliver meaningful results, you need a structured process that helps clients move from where they are to where they want to be. This framework can be flexible and personalized, but it should follow a predictable arc.  Many successful coaches use stages such as exploration, values clarification, habit building, goal setting, weekly check-ins, skill development, and periodic reflection. You may refine your approach over time, but having a methodology from the beginning demonstrates professionalism and helps clients feel grounded.  A coaching framework also

How to Strategically Raise Your Prices as a Personal Trainer

How to Strategically Raise Your Prices as a Personal Trainer There are many reasons for wanting to increase your price. Maybe you set your prices too low in the beginning. Perhaps your demand is now so high that you’re turning people away and have no other way of increasing your salary. Or perhaps you feel your time is worth more now you’ve gained a heap of experience. Whatever the reason, raising your prices can seem like daunting task. You might start asking yourself questions, like do you only raise the price for new clients? Do you raise the prices for all clients? Do you test it with some clients and see how that goes? Will your clients talk to each other and discover they’re paying different prices? Will you lose clients if you raise prices? This can be an arduous time for any PT and a conversation / situation you’d rather not be in. However, I’m here to give you some advice on what to do and how to do it. And if you should. I’m going to use an extreme example, so that anyone in between will be able to use this advice and adapt it to their own situation. Say you’re only charging $20 per session, because at the start you just wanted to get as many clients as possible. At this rate, if you had 8 sessions per day, worked 5 days per week, and take the standard 4 weeks off per year for holidays, the maximum you can expect to year is a yearly earnings of $38,400. You are worth more than that. You’re already working as long as you want to, so you need to increase your prices. Before doing anything you need to work out what you believe your sessions are worth. Or better yet, what you need to earn to live comfortably. Then you can work backwards to work how much to charge for each session. Let’s say you believe you need $80,000 per year to live comfortably, to work backwards follow these steps: $80,000 / 48 week = $1,667 per week $1,667 / 5 days = $333 per day $333 / 6 sessions (assuming you’ll lose some clients) = $56 per session. Your new price should be $56 per session. Now you can consider if your sessions are worth that. If they are, great start working on a strategy to increase to that price. If not, work on improving your offering and then work on increasing your price. You can’t simply bump up the price straight away, especially if it’s such a bump. With these figures, that is more than double what people are currently paying. Hitting clients with a 100% increase in cost will likely alienate a lot of clients. If it’s only around $5-10 increase to get to your new price, you might be able to do it in one go. As we have a $26 increase to make up, we’ll have to be more strategic. So here’s how you do it. Firstly, you need to understand that this will be a long process, and as such you need to put deadlines in place and record them in a calendar. Deadlines will help you to keep on track, help you remain aware on the time that has past, and give you plenty of time to work on your clients and ease them into the change. In this example we’ll increase our prices to $30 per session to begin with, and do it within a couple of weeks, then we’ll raise it to $40 in 6 months’ time, and then $55 in 12 months’ time. This gives your current clients time to adjust and grow with you. It also gives you time that you might turnover many clients anyway so the change will occur naturally. Secondly, if you have any new clients wanting your services, you can put them onto a higher price straight away, in this case we’ll put them straight onto $40 per session, and we’ll be upfront that the standard rate is $55, but they will get a rate of $40 until you plan on increasing the price, that date you put in the diary. This way everyone is on the same price and you won’t get confused by who’s paying what. The new clients will already be aware that the increase is coming. Next, it’s important to offer an increase in perceived value to negate any complaints. Some people won’t want to pay you more if they’re not getting anything extra. Whereas some of your best clients will happily pay more for the excellent service they’ve been having. Side note: A key point with increasing your prices is that you are currently delivering a service well above what you’re charging, if you’re delivering a $50 service and charging $20, people will see the rise coming. Whereas, if you’re delivering a $20 service, you’ll struggle to increase your price and keep clients. Here are some quick ways to add value to your service without too much effort in the long term. Once set up they take minimal upkeep: Include professional monthly fitness reviews (part of your sessions anyway). Write a nutrition advice pamphlet, save it as a PDF, have a designer friend make it look pretty, or learn yourself and email it to your clients. Take care of payments through direct debit – professional and no more asking for money. Accept credit card payments – using a company like https://squareup.com/au. Invest in upgrading your equipment (i.e. bands, boxing gloves etc) you can claim it all back at tax time. Write a monthly newsletter with advice and news. Build a website that looks expensive – using Squarespace (we have a marketing course that includes how to do this). On another note, if you want to increase your salary whilst strategically increasing your price, you can look at other revenue streams. Here are some ways to increase your salary: Start a weekly social bootcamp for your clients and others

Five FREE ways to be a better PT

Five FREE ways to be a better PT Here’s 5 free and simple ways to become a better Personal Trainer. Easy & simple advice for PTs… Be curious! When you see someone doing something strange in the gym, rather than dismiss it outright, first try to figure out whether there might be a good reason why they’re doing it that way. It may be part of a sport you’re not familiar with – for example, people who compete in strongman type events practice a lift called the continental clean, which to the unfamiliar eye might look like dangerously incorrect form, but actually makes a lot of sense in the context in which it is intended – or a way of doing an exercise to target a particular part of the movement, or a way to modify the exercise to work around a disability or something else entirely. Of course it’s possible that it’s just a poor movement pattern, but by being open minded it’s more likely that you will expand your knowledge base, exercise bank or understanding of something new. Stay up to date with news and pop culture. Yep, browsing your favourite accounts can be good for business. Why? It gives you something easy to chat about with clients and potential clients and can help build rapport or improve the flow of sessions with longer rest breaks or lower intensities. Try to learn a new skill that you know you’ll find challenging. Sometimes as trainers we forget what it was like to first learn how to squat or perform a new movement. Going through the struggles, frustrations and wins again with something new can help you better empathise with clients who are new to exercise or learning corrected movement patterns. Build a mental library of coaching cues. There are endless exercise instructional videos on YouTube, and while not all of them are of fantastic quality (or accuracy), they can be helpful for learning different ways of saying the same thing. Your favourite way to explain how to find a neutral spine position might not work on everyone you work with. Luckily, there are hundreds of other coaching cues or metaphors you could use – borrow some that you like and save them for communication emergencies. Make friends with other trainers! Having other brains to pick about challenges and people to share information with can help you identify areas for learning and increase your knowledge, plus having good community support can help keep you positive both on and off the job – and can really enrich your life and professional practice. First impressions as a Personal Trainer

First impressions as a Personal Trainer Thirty Seconds That Can Cost You a Career Relationships are made over time but they often never make it past the first few minutes. In fact, the first thirty seconds of contact have been proven critical in sales. How you present yourself initially creates an image that is often embedded for a lifetime. This article will present three essential elements for a lasting, successful first impression. Ask yourself why your potential client is in front of you. Why do they need a personal trainer? The obvious answer is that they are looking for guidance but the more powerful underlying truth is that they are looking for support. Working with someone 1:1 isn’t like other services, it involves emotion and connection. These people can get free workouts anywhere but what they lack is human interaction. This isn’t about becoming their friend, it’s about developing a bond of respect and authority. In short, it’s about trust. How do you establish trust in the first few seconds? Be professional. The engrained image of the meathead trainer is out dated and counterproductive. Walking around in a tank top and shouting at people is exactly what a new client doesn’t want to see. Think of your position as you would your physician. It’s not that different after all, you both are intimately involved in the health of your customer. Would your doctor plop down on a physio ball, covered in sweat and use terms like ‘dude’ or ‘totally’? If you want respect, act the part. Dress cleanly, make eye contact and speak intelligently. Be knowledgeable. You absolutely must be up to date on the latest industry information especially as it pertains to clinical exercise. Rarely will you find a client without some malady whether it be a recent injury or lifelong disease. These conditions are often what made them leery about starting a fitness program and also why they have sought you out. Everyone feels like their situation is unique and they are usually right. If you can convey knowledge of their particular issue and present a plan to safely address their needs you will gain tremendous trust. Seek out more advanced clinical certifications and stay current on your anatomy and physiology. Be personalised. The job title is ‘Personal Trainer’ for a reason. Everyone has a different situation and you should be able to create a plan accordingly. Don’t force people into a box, use your head and find a solution that fits their exact needs. If this person needs one day of strength training weekly and two days of yoga, give it to them. Don’t act as if you can only sell preset packages. They didn’t come in to buy gym and fitness supplies, they came for individualised treatment. Don’t sell them what they don’t need and never settle for less than what they require. This may mean less initial income for you but it reinforces trust that you are truly working for them. Over time these same people will return to you for their future needs.   Think about how you are perceived in the first few seconds of meeting someone. Strive to be the best representative possible of your industry. Doing so will establish your reputation as a professional and consequently guarantee your success throughout your career. This trend but my designs evolve as I evolve

This trend but my designs evolve as I evolve TBH I NEVER THOUGHT IT WOULD HAPPEN. Not when I decided to defy my parents and apply for a job in fashion instead of applying to med school. Not when I recorded one Pilates video intended for a small group of my students and put it on YouTube. Not when I started selling motivational tanks out of my parents’ garage. I had a dream I couldn’t ignore, and I followed it! The journey along the way was messy at times, but it allowed me to evolve and allowed my designs to evolve.     View this post on Instagram   A post shared by Cassey Ho (@blogilates)   2012 My merch begins with motivational tanks. The “Train like a beast look like a beauty” design gets so popular that the exact graphic gets ripped off by a large dept store which directly impacts my small biz. I stop making tanks altogether.   2016 I decide to go after my childhood dream of becoming a fashion designer and launch POPFLEX. Everyone’s excited and it starts off pretty well at first! 2017 I drop my third collection “Dark Bloom” and it FLOPS. The fit is terrible and customers lose trust. The orders nearly come to a halt. 2018 The worst year of my life. Between the internet tearing me down for how I looked, intense toxicity on my own tiny team, and the biz falling apart, I nearly give up. Not just POPFLEX but Blogilates the channel too. I am barely hanging on but Sam tells me to try one last time. “Give it 30 more days” he says. 2019 (not pictured) I refocus my energy on who I want to be, instead of being who others tell me to be. I rediscover myself, I rebuild my confidence, and as a result, completely transform my business too. 2021 I have an emotional breakdown. I realize that after 13 years of posting fitness videos and getting body shamed every single day, I had to take a break for my own mental health. During my break, I start showing a side of myself that no one’s ever seen before. Fashion designer Cassey emerges and my content shifts from teaching home workouts to sharing the creative process behind how I design my products.   2024 From Taylor Swift wearing the Pirouette Skort to hitting 10 MILLION subscribers on YouTube in the same year (WHAT!?), I am SO LUCKY to be living this life and doing what I love Every. Single. Day. WHAT A JOURNEY. Looking back at every time I wanted to give up, every learning opportunity, every time I worked myself to exhaustion, and every single person who supported (and STILL supports me!) along the way, I’m so overwhelmed with emotions. I really never thought I’d get here, and I’m so grateful. Can’t wait to see what’s next!   SHOP POPFLEX   TBH I NEVER THOUGHT IT WOULD HAPPEN. Simone took “Train like a beast” VERY literally… Soo you remember the motivational tanks of the 2000s right?! Let me refresh your memory… “Train like a BEAST look like a beauty.” Back in 2011, before POPFLEX was a thing, I sold these tanks out of my parents’ garage. Little did I know, a young future superstar bought one and took the phrase so literally that one day she would become the world’s most decorated gymnast of ALL TIME.     SIMONE BILES!! Ahhh how cool! I don’t personally know Simone and she doesn’t know me, but this weird little invisible string between us is something I’ll never forget and cherish forever. A much needed step away from the grind…

A much needed step away from the grind… Hey guys! Even though Sam and I work together every day, I often feel like we don’t get to see each other. I mean, physically I SEE him but if I’m being real, emotionally I’m not really there. I am hyper-focused, super intense, and honestly just too serious. But that’s quintessential business mode Cassey. So…every summer I make it a point to plan what I like to call our Minimoon: a chance for us to step away from the grind (well, as best as we can…I mean as business owners can you ever REALLY!?!?) and be fully present with one another. I call it a Minimoon because I’m forever chasing the pure happiness that was our Honeymoon! This year’s trip took us back to one of my favorite places on earth: French Polynesia.   View this post on Instagram   A post shared by Cassey Ho (@blogilates)   We spent our days in the water and our nights gazing up at the sparkling sky. We retired when the sun retired and rose as she rose. We ate fries at every meal because we could so we did. We walked everywhere and rushed nowhere. We chose to disconnect in order to reconnect. The past couple weeks have given me more than I wished for. (No but like, literally. I wished to swim with 1 mantaray and we ended up swimming with 9!!!) It’s been magical Now…we just need to figure out how to sprinkle this Minimoon mentality into our weekly lives instead of waiting for it once a year! Adding a sense of slowness where we can would be nice…except…kinda hard when the biz is in an exciting (and exhausting) growth phase. Oh well, we’ll figure it out! We always do, right Sam!?!
