Appreciating the Journey That Led to Living Out My Childhood Dream I uploaded my first YouTube video in 2009 not knowing that decision was going to change the rest of my life.   View this post on Instagram   A post shared by Cassey Ho (@blogilates)   I made up the screen name “Blogilates” because I simply meshed together 2 things I liked: blogging and Pilates. I uploaded my first workout video because it was a going away gift for my 40 POP Pilates students who wanted to still work out with me after I had to move away. I wasn’t trying to start a brand, get rich, or be famous. In fact, back in those days, you couldn’t even make money on YouTube. Brand deals and Adsense were not even a thing. It was simply a place to connect. Thank you VidCon for inducting me into the Hall of Fame What an HONOR, but especially alongside legends Michelle Phan, Philip DeFranco and Markiplier! Can’t believe I attended my first vidcon back in 2012 as a regular attendee waiting in line to take a pic with Harley of Epic Meal Time (who doesn’t love watching people construct absurdly large towers of high calorie foods then consuming it like a beast who hasn’t eaten for weeks?), then came back as a full-on YouTuber speaking on panels in front of thousands, then yesterday, inducted into the Hall of Fame? I have to really force myself to stop and look back in order to appreciate my journey, because too often I’m moving too fast, only looking forward, and thinking about everything going wrong instead of what has gone right. A year of love stories from the POPFLEX team Last weekend, I visited Michigan for the first time to see Kristen, our Senior Manager of Creator Relations, tie the knot! She was a literal fairy. And it got me thinking… Sam and I had the honor of attending FOUR weddings so far this year for people on the POPFLEX team (aka the Blogifam). I know from past experience how most of the time, people prefer to keep work life and personal life separate. In my early corporate life, inviting a manager to a wedding NEVER would have been a thing. And not once but FOUR TIMES!!! FOURRRR! WHAT. IS. HAPPENING. I have no words. Just . Goodbye. Just kidding. This trend but my designs evolve as I evolve TBH I NEVER THOUGHT IT WOULD HAPPEN. Not when I decided to defy my parents and apply for a job in fashion instead of applying to med school. Not when I recorded one Pilates video intended for a small group of my students and put it on YouTube. Not when I started selling motivational tanks out of my parents’ garage. I had a dream I couldn’t ignore, and I followed it! The journey along the way was messy at times, but it allowed me to evolve and allowed my designs to evolve.     View this post on Instagram   A post shared by Cassey Ho (@blogilates)   2012 My merch begins with motivational tanks. The “Train like a beast look like a beauty” design gets so popular that the exact graphic gets ripped off by a large dept store which directly impacts my small biz. I stop making tanks altogether.   2016 I decide to go after my childhood dream of becoming a fashion designer and launch POPFLEX. Everyone’s excited and it starts off pretty well at first! 2017 I drop my third collection “Dark Bloom” and it FLOPS. The fit is terrible and customers lose trust. The orders nearly come to a halt. 2018 The worst year of my life. Between the internet tearing me down for how I looked, intense toxicity on my own tiny team, and the biz falling apart, I nearly give up. Not just POPFLEX but Blogilates the channel too. I am barely hanging on but Sam tells me to try one last time. “Give it 30 more days” he says. 2019 (not pictured) I refocus my energy on who I want to be, instead of being who others tell me to be. I rediscover myself, I rebuild my confidence, and as a result, completely transform my business too. 2021 I have an emotional breakdown. I realize that after 13 years of posting fitness videos and getting body shamed every single day, I had to take a break for my own mental health. During my break, I start showing a side of myself that no one’s ever seen before. Fashion designer Cassey emerges and my content shifts from teaching home workouts to sharing the creative process behind how I design my products.   2024 From Taylor Swift wearing the Pirouette Skort to hitting 10 MILLION subscribers on YouTube in the same year (WHAT!?), I am SO LUCKY to be living this life and doing what I love Every. Single. Day. WHAT A JOURNEY. Looking back at every time I wanted to give up, every learning opportunity, every time I worked myself to exhaustion, and every single person who supported (and STILL supports me!) along the way, I’m so overwhelmed with emotions. I really never thought I’d get here, and I’m so grateful. Can’t wait to see what’s next!   SHOP POPFLEX   TBH I NEVER THOUGHT IT WOULD HAPPEN. A snapshot of life lately… Hey guys! Life. It’s been…absolute insanity. Like the really good kind of insanity but the really intense kind of insanity. The kind that you dream of, but the kind that will break you if keep going like this. Yesterday I was honored as one of Youtube’s OG Asian American creators, alongside some iconic legends. I was supposed to prepare a speech…but in a room full of people who I had once admired from afar who then came to be my real-life friends, I decided to speak from the heart instead. Isn’t it wild how the universe works? Pilates, YouTube and you guys brought me back to my childhood dream of becoming a fashion designer…something I was told I’d NEVER succeed at…and yet here I am, living the most intense version of my dream. So intense that it’s about to break me. After the gala, Sam and I had to tend to some real world duties. In my literal evening gown and heels, we went to go check on a paint job (we’re in the middle of moving into a new office for POPFLEX) to make sure the contractors did their work. It was then that I asked Sam to shoot me amongst the construction because it was a perfect representation of us TRYING to harmonize the extremes in our lives: The contrast of dream and reality… The juxtaposition of elegance and chaos… The push and pull between a thriving business and a balanced life that does not exist… This is us right now. Truly thrilled. Yet truly exhausted. I’m grateful for all of it, and for what’s to come. But I know in my bones that if I don’t slow down I will break down. Hey guys! Life.
