Appreciating the Journey That Led to Living Out My Childhood Dream

Appreciating the Journey That Led to Living Out My Childhood Dream I uploaded my first YouTube video in 2009 not knowing that decision was going to change the rest of my life.   View this post on Instagram   A post shared by Cassey Ho (@blogilates)   I made up the screen name “Blogilates” because I simply meshed together 2 things I liked: blogging and Pilates. I uploaded my first workout video because it was a going away gift for my 40 POP Pilates students who wanted to still work out with me after I had to move away. I wasn’t trying to start a brand, get rich, or be famous. In fact, back in those days, you couldn’t even make money on YouTube. Brand deals and Adsense were not even a thing. It was simply a place to connect. Thank you VidCon for inducting me into the Hall of Fame What an HONOR, but especially alongside legends Michelle Phan, Philip DeFranco and Markiplier! Can’t believe I attended my first vidcon back in 2012 as a regular attendee waiting in line to take a pic with Harley of Epic Meal Time (who doesn’t love watching people construct absurdly large towers of high calorie foods then consuming it like a beast who hasn’t eaten for weeks?), then came back as a full-on YouTuber speaking on panels in front of thousands, then yesterday, inducted into the Hall of Fame? I have to really force myself to stop and look back in order to appreciate my journey, because too often I’m moving too fast, only looking forward, and thinking about everything going wrong instead of what has gone right. We need to talk about the low-rise trend

We need to talk about the low-rise trend Did you know fashion trends recycle every 20ish years? And many times, new or returning trends signal some kind of societal shift. Remember my wide-leg sweatpant theory?! Today, I have another fashion history/trend deep dive for you… one that more people need to be talking about.   View this post on Instagram   A post shared by Cassey Ho (@blogilates) Low-rise is back And we love! So cute. But this trend’s return from the 00s may not be as innocent as it seems. Do you remember what else was in style the last time low-rise jeans were in? Let me give you a hint. Do you see it? I had a suspicion that the return of low-rise is a signal that beauty standards have shifted yet again. I felt like the correlation was correlating… SO I went onto Google Trends and typed in two of the hottest things that people are talking about right now, juuust to see if there was a correlation. And guess what I found?   Just as the low-rise trend has gained popularity, so has interest in GLP-1s. If you’re thinking noo no that’s just a coincidence… I found more. As interest in Pilates has trended up over the last 5 years, searches for how to get a bigger butt have decreased. The searches are proving that slimmer physiques are trending… again. Do fashion AND beauty standards cycle? We know fashion recycles itself, but I’m surprised to see us going back to the harmful body trends of the 2000s. It’s only been 10 years since Kim K. literally broke the internet with her curvy physique and made that the IT body type. Today, with the return of the VS Fashion Show, it’s clear that thin is in. My question All of this makes me wonder: If fashion is a reflection of society, then what is it saying about us? What do you think? Did you know fashion trends recycle every 20ish years? And many times, new or returning trends signal some kind of societal shift. Remember my wide-leg sweatpant theory?! Today, I have… Cassey{authorlink}https://www.blogilates.com/blog/low-rise-trend-beauty-standards/Blogilates The official blog of Cassey Ho https://i0.wp.com/www.blogilates.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/02/fav-1.png?fit=32%2C32&ssl=1

AFPA Graduate Spotlight: Terri Scrivano, Pilates Fitness Instructor

AFPA Graduate Spotlight: Terri Scrivano, Pilates Fitness Instructor During the last 31+ years, AFPA has certified over 130,000 health, nutrition, and fitness professionals. We regularly feature distinguished and new graduates who are using what they have learned to inspire others and make a difference.  Meet one of our featured graduates, Terri Scrivano. Terri has earned her Pilates Instructor Certification from AFPA. Meet AFPA Graduate Terri Scrivano Tell us about yourself. My name is Terri Scrivano. I currently live in Barnegat, NJ, but I was born and raised in a small town north of Buffalo, NY. I am certified as a Group Fitness and Pilates Instructor, Senior Fitness Specialist, and Nutrition Coach. I am also the founder and CEO of Embrace Wellness With Terri, a company I created to help women over 50 achieve sustainable weight loss without dieting. My goal is to help them sleep well and live vibrant, pain-free lives with renewed energy and confidence. How did you initially become interested in health and wellness? As far back as my twenties, I struggled to achieve a balanced approach to managing my weight. Despite my commitment to dieting and exercising, my weight and emotions felt trapped in a never-ending yo-yo cycle. At 55, after going through menopause, I found myself carrying an extra 30 pounds, making it the heaviest I had ever been. I was suffering from chronic inflammation and pain that prevented me from even doing simple activities like walking. I had just lost my mom and was witnessing my dad’s health decline. Both of them had struggled with poor nutrition and a lack of movement in their final years. My mom’s death profoundly affected me; it served as my wake-up call. I realized I not only needed to take action to improve my own health but also wanted to help other older adults. Fueled by a strong passion for discovering the answers that could benefit both myself and others, I invested in my education and became a Certified Group Fitness and Pilates Instructor, a Senior Fitness Specialist, and a Nutrition Coach. After retiring from a 35-year career in the corporate world, I launched my own health coaching business. I have successfully lost 30 pounds, gained strength, and am full of energy. I’m once again enjoying the activities I love, such as taking 3-mile walks, teaching Pilates, and traveling. In my coaching practice, I help other women with proper nutrition, the importance of movement, and guide them toward an exciting path to health, wellness, and happiness. Which AFPA certification have you earned, and why did you choose that certification program? I obtained my Pilates certification from AFPA. In addition to my Group Fitness Certification, I chose to specialize in Pilates because I believe it is a highly beneficial practice for the women I teach who are over 50. Learn How to Become a Pilates Instructor Online in Less Than 6 Months Tell us about your business and how you serve people. I am the founder and CEO of Embrace Wellness with Terri. I am using my certifications to teach fitness classes in an active adult community, in addition to my health coaching. What are your favorite parts of running your business or putting your certification to use? What I absolutely love about running my own business is the freedom to be my own boss and set my schedule! While starting a business comes with its challenges, the time and dedication have truly paid off. Collaborating with incredible women and witnessing their transformations brings me immense joy and fulfillment each day! I would not have come this far or gained confidence without the certifications. How has becoming certified with AFPA impacted your life? The impact has been truly remarkable! It’s incredibly rewarding to support women in shaping their futures with confidence and purpose. I’m genuinely excited about the positive change we’re creating together! Do you have any success stories you would like to share? I have a couple of success stories I would like to share. I have been working with a client, and she has been doing Pilates with me for about three months. At the start of Pilates, she talked about how she didn’t feel strong. But now that she’s been exercising with me and working with me on nutrition, she told me the other day that her mom had taken a picture of her. She looked at her arms and said, “Wow, I can’t believe my arms look really sculpted!” I loved hearing that story. Another woman I’ve been working with—she’s taken my Pilates class every day, and I’m also working with her on nutrition—recently lost about 18 pounds. She was saying how she can now fit into her jeans that she hasn’t been able to put on in probably about 10 years. I was very excited to hear that from her. These are just a few incredible women making some remarkable changes through proper nutrition and fitness—and, of course, by taking my Pilates class. What advice would you give others considering getting certified through AFPA? The advice I would give anyone thinking about trying to become certified with AFPA—or any certification when it comes to health and fitness—is: don’t hesitate. I was in the corporate world for 35 years, and never did I think I would be where I am today. I started with myself—losing 30 pounds, getting strong, full of energy—and then working with all these other individuals. It’s just so rewarding, and I probably would not have had the confidence to do any of this without my certification. Don’t hesitate; do something good for yourself, and then maybe you can pay that forward. How can we find you online? The slow cardio treadmill workout I’m loving right now

The slow cardio treadmill workout I’m loving right now My current workout mood: 30-1-30 30 incline 1 mph 30 minutes   View this post on Instagram   A post shared by Cassey Ho (@blogilates)   30-1-30 Treadmill Workout This treadmill workout seriously gets my heart rate so high, and in comparison to running (which feels like torture to me) this slow cardio hiking situation feels more enjoyable for my body! I spent yearsssss trying to like HIIT, trying to like running, but honestly, it always felt like I had to try SO hard. I also never really felt like I got better at it.   Ever since I’ve been testing out slow cardio like the 12-3-30, I’ve noticed my body is just simply liking it more. I’m better at it. It’s weird because my heart rate gets high (higher than when I’m running) and yet my muscles aren’t dying. Mentally and emotionally, I’m not dying either! To be completely honest, it’s the first cardio I think I’m actually good at and getting better at, which is so exciting! It all kinda goes back to what your body is better suited for. I have the endurance to push through slow hard things (that’s why I’m good at Pilates) but I know I’m bad at fast sprints (that’s why I never really enjoyed HIIT). It’s just not meant for my body, so I gas out really fast. Give this a try if fast cardio didn’t work for you either! I’m seeing changes in my body and my booty…and I love! Oh and if your treadmill doesn’t go to 30, try a step mill!   My current workout mood: 30-1-30 30 incline ↗️ 1 mph 🐌 30 minutes ⏱️   View this post on Instagram   A post shared by Cassey Ho (@blogilates)   30-1-30… Cassey{authorlink}https://www.blogilates.com/blog/30-1-30-treadmill-workout/Blogilates The official blog of Cassey Ho https://www.blogilates.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/02/fav-1.png

A snapshot of life lately…

A snapshot of life lately… Hey guys! Life. It’s been…absolute insanity. Like the really good kind of insanity but the really intense kind of insanity. The kind that you dream of, but the kind that will break you if keep going like this. Yesterday I was honored as one of Youtube’s OG Asian American creators, alongside some iconic legends. I was supposed to prepare a speech…but in a room full of people who I had once admired from afar who then came to be my real-life friends, I decided to speak from the heart instead. Swipe a couple to see a lil clip of my speech!   View this post on Instagram   A post shared by Cassey Ho (@blogilates) My life and my career today would not be what it is without that first 10 minute Pilates video I posted on YouTube in 2009. Isn’t it wild how the universe works? Pilates, YouTube and you guys brought me back to my childhood dream of becoming a fashion designer…something I was told I’d NEVER succeed at…and yet here I am, living the most intense version of my dream. So intense that it’s about to break me. After the gala, Sam and I had to tend to some real world duties. In my literal evening gown and heels, we went to go check on a paint job (we’re in the middle of moving into a new office for POPFLEX) to make sure the contractors did their work. It was then that I asked Sam to shoot me amongst the construction because it was a perfect representation of us TRYING to harmonize the extremes in our lives: The contrast of dream and reality… The juxtaposition of elegance and chaos… The push and pull between a thriving business and a balanced life that does not exist… This is us right now. Truly thrilled. Yet truly exhausted. I’m grateful for all of it, and for what’s to come. But I know in my bones that if I don’t slow down I will break down. Hey guys! Life. It’s been…absolute insanity. Like the really good kind of insanity but the really intense kind of insanity. 8 Pilates Mat Exercises to Make Your Workout More Fun

8 Pilates Mat Exercises to Make Your Workout More Fun  At Lindywell, we focus on Pilates mat exercises because we love how accessible they are. You can do your workout anywhere and sometimes, you don’t even need a mat! (Our standing workouts are a favorite in the community.) Another thing we love is how fun these exercises can be. Forget workouts that are repetitive, long, and boring. At Lindywell, we always want to make workouts challenging but also enjoyable. I mean, why else would we do it, right? Plus, when we love what we’re doing, we’re more likely to be consistent with it. A win-win! Let’s talk about the importance of building more fun into your workout routine. Afterward, I’ll share some of my favorite Pilates mat exercises that are as fun as they are effective.  The Benefits of Making Fitness Fun It’s no secret that a consistent wellness routine is important for both your physical and mental health. If you don’t look forward to exercise, however, chances are, you won’t stick with the program. That’s because interest and enjoyment are two main predictors of sticking with a workout routine over time. This fun factor boosts your intrinsic motivation, which helps to build more consistency. Plus, this has a positive effect on your mental wellness too. There’s a direct correlation between exercise and dopamine (your happy hormone). The more you love it, the more you do it, the happier you are. That’s an equation I can get behind! Finally, prioritizing fun in your workouts can help with social connections as well. When study participants took part in group or community exercise programs they felt more energized, experienced healthier relationships, and felt more satisfaction in life overall.  You can’t argue with science—fun fitness pays off!      8 Fun and Playful Pilates Mat Exercises  While I think most Pilates exercises are fun, I especially love these ones, which come from our Joyful Movement workout.  If you’re not already a Lindywell member, sign up for your 14-day free trial to get instant access to this, along with more workouts, a weekly workout calendar, and daily featured workout suggestions—say goodbye to decision fatigue! Plus, our breathwork sessions help alleviate stress and regulate your nervous system! 1. Spinal Warm-Up (10 repetitions) Allow your body to move in an unstructured, free-flowing manner. This is a fun and comfortable way to loosen the spine, increase circulation, and work out any stiffness or tension. Remember to softly bend the knees, maintain a neutral posture, relax the shoulders, then let the arms swing freely as you twist from one side to the other—and have fun! 2. Prancing (10 repetitions) This movement activates the calf muscles and helps strengthen the feet and ankles, an area that can be easily forgotten. As you perform this back-and-forth motion, maintain a lift in your pelvic floor and length in your spine.  3. Standing Balance (5 repetitions on each side) This is one of my favorite Pilates mat exercises for challenging stability. Balancing forces your accessory muscles (all the little muscles) to work harder, so you’ll build even more strength. Remember to continuously use the core to stabilize yourself as you move through this exercise. 4. Rolling Like a Ball Rolling is so silly and playful—and it’s also a great way to massage the spinal column while building core strength. If you find that you’re falling flat on your back as you roll back, tuck your pelvis more (creating more of a c-shape with your spine) to get that rolling motion. This one is fun, so enjoy it! 5. Open Leg Rocker (10 repetitions) If you love Rolling Like a Ball, you’ll love this one too—and the added challenge can make it even more silly because it’s not always easy to do gracefully! Remember that you can modify this position with a slight bend in the knees.  6. Hamstring Pull with Roll-Ups (5 repetitions on each side) Tension in the hamstrings can lead to injuries or limit flexibility and range of motion in the hips and lower back. This is a great Pilates mat exercise to do regularly to stay mobile if you sit at a desk all day—plus, it’s also great for your core.  7. Seal Pup (10 repetitions) Unleash your inner seal with this exercise—”barking” noises are optional, but encouraged! As with all of the other rolling exercises, remember to tuck your pelvis and activate the core so you can flow while building strength.  8. Plank Hovers with C-Curves (5 repetitions on each side) This movement creates resistance in your shoulders, arms, spine, abdominals, glutes, quads, and calves. It’s one of those amazing full-body Pilates mat exercises that’s so efficient! Exercises like this make your workouts super effective—and fun. Make Your Workout More Fun With Pilates  No matter where you’re at on your fitness journey, Mat Pilates is accessible, beneficial, and enjoyable. You can adapt each move to your own comfort level while building strength, balance, and flexibility. If you want to make fitness fun, give these exercises a try—and don’t forget to sign up for your free 14-day Lindywell trial to enjoy this full workout and many more like it!
