6 Sleep Positions and What They Say About You

6 Sleep Positions and What They Say About You Some sleep experts would have you believe there are three basic ways to sleep: back, stomach, or side. But for anyone who has tossed and turned trying to find the perfect sleep position, you know there are a million and one ways to contort yourself while trying to catch some elusive zzz’s. We think some of those other sleep positions below deserve a little more attention. See if any of these sound familiar to you — and what that says about you. 1. The Bookworm You tend to curl up in bed with a book, doze off mid-chapter, and wake up when your Kindle (or book, if you like to keep it old-school) hits you in the face. You’re a passionate person who devotes literally every waking minute to their interests — but if you feel like your sleep quality is lacking, you may want to power down your tablet before bedtime. 2. The Cuddler You can’t sleep unless you’re curled up to someone or something, whether it’s your partner, your pup, or a pillow. Being a cuddler is great on chilly winter nights, but not so much in the summer. On hot nights, stick with a body pillow — it’ll never ask, “Can you please get your arm off of me?” 3. The Drunken Starfish You sleep with your arms and legs stretched towards the four corners of your bed — and there’s a decent chance you’re snoring and drooling, too. Sleep scientists say spread-eagle sleepers are carefree — and despite their bed-hogging ways, they tend to be selfless friends. Still, if you share a bed, you might want to upgrade to a king size so your partner has some space to sleep, too. 4. The Center of Attention You prefer to sleep right in the middle of the bed. The territorial types who favor this sleep position tend to be decisive, commanding, and unafraid. It’s great that you own your space (hey, you do you!) but if you share a bed with someone, you might want to use that decisiveness to pick a side of the bed. 5. The Thrasher Why pick just one sleep position when you can try them all? You spend most nights tossing and turning, until your blankets are twisted around you like a tornado. Shifting sleep positions is actually pretty common — one study found the average person changes position approximately twice an hour while sleeping. But if you think your restlessness is becoming a problem, talk to your doctor to rule out certain sleep problems. 6. The Corner Dweller Fetal position is reportedly the most popular sleep position, and Corner Dwellers take it to the next level — curled up in a tiny ball in a small corner of the bed, not bothering anyone. People who sleep in this position are thought to be sensitive and soft-hearted. (Bonus: Sleep specialists say side sleeping positions tend to be the most comfy.) Corner Dwellers may be a great match for Drunken Starfish, since you only need a small patch of mattress to get cozy. The post 6 Sleep Positions and What They Say About You appeared first on BODi. 10 Easy Ways to Improve Your Sleep Hygiene

10 Easy Ways to Improve Your Sleep Hygiene Sleep is one of the pillars of good health, and getting enough of it can even help with weight loss. But sometimes life gets in the way of a good night’s sleep — and that’s where sleep hygiene tips can help. “Sleep hygiene is a fancy way of saying good habits that prepare your body and mind for sleep,” says Chris Brantner, certified sleep science coach and founder of SleepZoo. “Sleep hygiene encompasses all the behaviors throughout the day that end up affecting your quantity and quality of sleep.” So how can you improve your sleep hygiene? Here are 10 simple tips. 1. Get Into a Bedtime Routine Bedtime routines aren’t just for babies. “Our bodies crave routines,” Brantner says. Set a time each night to power down your devices, then find a calming ritual like taking a bath, meditating, or sipping warm tea (caffeine-free, of course). Aim to crawl under the covers around the same time each night. 2. Skip the Afternoon Coffee “Caffeine in the afternoon can make it difficult for you to get to bed,” Brantner says. If your energy is lagging in the afternoon, forego the espresso shot and recharge with a few exercises at your desk instead. 3. Consider Skipping the Nightcap, Too Having a drink before bed might help you feel drowsier, but it can also mess with your sleep quality throughout the night. Studies have linked alcohol consumption before bed to snoring, sleep apnea, and decreased REM sleep. (And you’ll probably have to wake up for a bathroom break in the night, too.) 4. Nap Responsibly The American Sleep Association recommends limiting any daytime naps to “power naps” of 30 minutes or less. Any longer than that, and you’re likely to wake up groggy. Plus, if you take a long nap too late in the day, it can make it harder to fall asleep that night. 5. Splurge on Sheets You Love You spend nearly one-third of your life in bed, so your sheets shouldn’t be an afterthought. Don’t just grab the cheapest set you can find — choose a bedding set that’s cozy and inviting. 6. Make Your Bedroom a Stress-Free Zone “Your bedroom needs to be a calming place,” Brantner says. Get in touch with your inner Marie Kondo and clear the clutter off your nightstands, bureau, and floors. And keep any distractions — like your work laptop or that pile of unfolded laundry — out of sight. 7. Check the Thermostat Your core body temperature drops slightly in preparation for sleep, and keeping your room cool can help this process. The National Sleep Foundation recommends keeping the temperature in your bedroom between 60 and 67 degrees at night. 8. Ban Devices Before Bed The blue light from digital devices can mess with your body’s natural sleep-wake cycle — not to mention it’s hard to unwind when you’re in a Reddit rabbit hole. Ideally, you should be screen-free for two to three hours before bedtime. If that’s not possible, invest in a pair of blue light-blocking glasses to wear while you’re scrolling. 9. Create a Calming Playlist Your bedroom should be as quiet as possible, but if total silence freaks you out — or you just need to drown out your neighbor’s nocturnal barking dog — choose something relaxing to listen to, like a guided meditation or soft ambient music. BODi Sound Meditation uses instruments like singing bowls, harps, and chimes to help you feel calm and relaxed before bed. 10. Track Your Sleep Habits Wearable tech isn’t just for counting steps — many fitness trackers can also monitor your sleep patterns and alert you if you’re falling short or stirring frequently throughout the night. 3 Mental Health Benefits of Spending More Time Outside

3 Mental Health Benefits of Spending More Time Outside When we think of the benefits of being outside, we tend to think of outdoor exercise like hiking, trail running, rock climbing, or cycling in terms of their physical rewards. But studies show that merely being outdoors may have some pretty substantial benefits for your brain, too. So whether you’re working out, doing chores, or simply walking outdoors, consider extending your activity. Here are a few of the benefits of being outside. 1. Spending Time in Nature May Improve Short-term Memory If you find yourself a little more forgetful than usual, it might be worth your time to stop what you’re doing and head for the nearest park for a quick walk. In a study of short-term memory: One group was sent on a stroll through an arboretum Another had to walk through busy city streets The group that got to see the trees performed better on a short-term memory task than the city-walkers So the next time you can’t remember what it is you were supposed to be doing, it may help to reap the benefits of being outside and take a walk in the woods. 2. Being Outdoors Might Aid Cognition It’s not just simply the ability to recall things that gets better when you get some good outdoor time. Studies have found that outdoor activities may boost cognitive function overall by offering the brain a wide variety of low-key, modestly-attention-grabbing stimuli (instead of the direct, stress-inducing stimuli like an urgent Slack notification from your boss). And the more time you spend outdoors, the greater the effect: A study in PLOS ONE found that backpackers who took a creative problem-solving test after four days isolated from technology performed 50-percent better than those who took the test before hitting the trail. Although we all can’t always take four days off to give our brains a boost, even a short amount of time will help, and it all comes in addition to the mental benefits of regular ol’ exercise, too! 3. Being Outside May Improve Mood Although many of us have likely had the experience of coming back from a good hike or trail run in the park feeling better about the world, new evidence shows that the benefits of being outside may include better moods. This piggybacks with the general effects of exercise. Time spent in the outdoors may help improve feelings of self-esteem and help fight depression and stress, as well. A study in Japan found that a walk through a natural area lowered stress hormones, pulse rate, and even blood pressure. Studies have also found that just spending two hours in a natural setting can help if you’re having trouble sleeping – although it may be in your best interest to cut back on the Joe, as well. More to discover As scientists, researchers, and mental and physical health professionals continue to study the beneficial effects of being in the outdoors, we’ll soon be able to add even more items to this list. So the next time your brain is feeling a little sluggish, try taking your exercise routine outdoors to take advantage of some of the many benefits of being outside. 8 Tips for Adding Meditation to Your Daily Routine

8 Tips for Adding Meditation to Your Daily Routine If you haven’t made a healthy meditation practice part of your daily wellness routine, what are you waiting for? Not only can meditation help you feel calmer, but it also benefits your overall health and wellness. Meditation can improve focus and attention, stress management, and emotional regulation, says Catherine S. Marquette, E-RYT 500. It can also help you build awareness, feel a deeper connection to the world around you, and manage stress and anxiety symptoms. Here’s how to make meditation a part of your daily routine so you can feel happier and more present in everything you do. 1. Schedule It Just like your meal plan or your workout routine, plan your meditation practice in advance. “Commit to a time — ideally the same time each day,” Marquette says. “This is a good rule for building any sort of a habit.” Figure out what time of day works best for you — in the morning to start your day feeling focused, in the afternoon as a pick-me-up, or before bedtime to relax. Marquette schedules her practice in the morning, right after a walk: “My day hasn’t run away from me just yet, helping me to set the stage for the rest of the day,” she says. 2. Take Advantage of Tech Can’t get to a meditation studio? No worries — you can meditate anywhere, thanks to your smartphone. Set a reminder on your phone for your daily meditation practice so you don’t forget. Then try a guided meditation app or virtual class to learn more about meditation techniques. BODi’s Sound Meditation, for example, is a series of sound meditations designed to help reduce stress, increase productivity, create balance, and improve sleep quality. It’s convenient, simple, and will give you the support you need to get started. 3. Start Small Start with just a few minutes of meditation per day so it doesn’t feel burdensome, then work your way up. “Consistency is the most important aspect in order to see change,” Marquette says. “I’d rather have students meditate 5 minutes a day every day than meditate for 60 minutes only one day per week.” 4. Decorate Your Space You can meditate anywhere or any time, but creating a designated space for meditation in your home may motivate you to stay consistent. Here are a few items you may want to include in your “zen den”: Candles or incense in soothing scents Photos of nature or a favorite piece of artwork Comfy pillows, cushions, and blankets A supportive mat or meditation pillow 5. Journal After Each Session Journaling is a great way to notice the benefits, revelations, struggles, and impacts of your meditation practice. “Have a notebook and pen close to wherever you are meditating,” says Marquette. Jot down any recurring thoughts or sensations from your practice, she adds, and look for themes or patterns at the end of each week. This will help you see the progress you’re making! 6. Hold Yourself Accountable There will be days you’re feeling uninspired, but if you’ve got someone or something to keep you going, you’ll set yourself up for greater success. Marquette suggests putting a streak board on your fridge as a visual reminder of your progress or inviting family and friends into your journey so they can help hold you accountable. 7. Combine Meditation and Exercise Feed two birds with one scone and try a movement-based meditation, such as walking meditation. If walking is already part of your daily routine, it’s a great opportunity to add some mindfulness. Try walking a new trail or path. How do your feet feel on the ground? Do you hear any sounds, like crunching leaves or birds chirping? What are the smells around you? How does the sun feel on your skin? Really notice each step, sound, and sensation. 8. Be Mindful During Daily Activities Stack your habits! You can train yourself to meditate while cooking, commuting, or even doing household chores, Marquette says. Here are a few ways you can sneak in a meditation practice: While washing dishes or riding the bus, look out the window and notice what’s happening in your environment. Do you see kids playing? Do you notice a dog chasing a squirrel? Are the leaves blowing in the wind? Take mental inventory of your space. Count each piece as you fold your laundry. Feel the warmth of the freshly dried clothes on your skin. Practice mindful eating. Chew each bite slowly, tasting the different elements of the food. Above all, Marquette says, stick with it: “Be disciplined and courageous in order to build meditation as a healthy, daily habit in your life.” The post 8 Tips for Adding Meditation to Your Daily Routine appeared first on BODi. 3 Ways to Get Started on Your 2024 Goals

3 Ways to Get Started on Your 2024 Goals In 2023, we proposed a new tradition for the New Year: World Health Esteem Month. Instead of pushing ambitious goal-setting and deprivation, we designated January as a time to appreciate ourselves for who we are and honor the small choices we can make to enhance our lives. In honor of the second annual World Health Esteem Month, we’re back with practical tips and ideas for how to love yourself as you work toward your goals. 1. Choose a fitness program with structure With 2024 on the horizon, we came across a Forbes Health/OnePoll study conducted in October of 2023, in which 48% of respondents indicated improving fitness as their top priority in the new year. We happen to know a thing or two about that. Here are some things to keep in mind as you look for the fitness program to kick off your year: It gets you into a rhythm: It takes around 10 weeks to form a habit, so by the time March ends, your daily workout should feel as natural as brushing your teeth. It does the thinking for you: Leg day or upper body? Cardio or abs? This guesswork can be more laborious than the workout itself! Pick a program that does all that planning for you. It progresses over time: The point of all this work is to see results, meaning that you will have more strength, mobility, and endurance in month two than you did in month one. Find a program that anticipates that and ups the challenge as you go. Don’t have a program in mind? We recommend Shaun T’s new program, DIG DEEPER. It’s a 12-week program designed to reshape your body by building lean muscle mass and reducing body fat through 4 collections of workouts. 2. Choose an eating plan you can stick with A great companion to your fitness routine is an eating plan that focuses on healthy eating but also doesn’t require deprivation or calorie counting. When considering how to approach your nutrition this year, look for an eating plan that: Allows you to eat the way you love to eat but makes it healthy. Helps you work on your mindset so you can sustain both the weight loss and the eating habits. Includes recipes so you don’t have to weed through the internet to find your own. Incorporates group support and expert guidance — because when you’re starting something new, it’s always good to have a team around you. Not sure where to start? We recommend our first-ever nutrition Super Block, the 2B Mindset Super Block. It’s a 4-week program in which Registered Dietitian Nutritionist Ilana Muhlstein expands on the principles of her eating plan with lessons to help keep you consistent month over month. If portion control is more your speed, check out Portion Fix, Autumn Calabrese’s container-based approach to getting the results you expect, while you still enjoy the food, drinks, and desserts you love. 3. Choose a supplement to support whole-body health While we obviously can’t identify all the reasons our motivation flags, sickness, exhaustion, and sore muscles top the list. Working toward our goals with all the energy and focus we need requires taking care of our body between workouts. And sometimes, that means supplements that help:* Sharpen your focus Increase your energy Combat exercise-induced muscle soreness Jump-start recovery Keep you hydrated Bonus tip: Set up your home gym Of course, you can get fit with just your body. But adding a membership to BODi can really up your game. Now for a limited time, when you purchase a 1-Year Annual BODi Membership, we’ll include a 2nd year FREE! Get BODi here. No matter how you decide to celebrate World Health Esteem Month this year, remember to appreciate yourself for who you are as you make changes to reach your goals. You’re worth it. 24 Inspiring Quotes for Daily Motivation

24 Inspiring Quotes for Daily Motivation Here’s the thing about motivation: It requires constant renewal to be effective. It’s not enough to just get motivated for one workout, one well-balanced meal, or one meditation session. Pushing past plateaus and accomplishing goals require that we get motivated every single day — to lace up those shoes again, to grab an apple instead of chips again, to refill your water bottle again. Finding that day-to-day motivation isn’t always easy. Maybe you recently started a new workout but you’re having difficulty sticking with it. Maybe the winter weather is zapping your mojo. Maybe you just don’t feel like working out. Whenever you feel like your daily motivation is waning, these wise words and helpful mantras can give you an extra boost. 1. “The pain you feel today will be the strength you feel tomorrow.” —Unknown MTVT U via Pinterest 2. “Don’t let yesterday take up too much of today.” —Will Rogers Arya Rose via Pinterest 3. “We are what we repeatedly do.
