10 Inexpensive Self-Care Practices to Add to Your Daily Routine

10 Inexpensive Self-Care Practices to Add to Your Daily Routine For most of us, the phrase “self-care” calls to mind perfectly crafted Instagram posts of toes in white sand beaches, glowing skin from a professional facial, or rested eyes after a massage. But self-care doesn’t have to cost a fortune. In fact, anything that makes you feel happier, healthier, relaxed, or restored can qualify as self-care. Here’s a list of our favorite inexpensive ways to make self-care part of your daily routine. 1. Get Some Shut-Eye Who doesn’t love sleep? In all its many forms — power naps, nappuccinos, sleeping in on weekends — sleep qualifies as self-care. (Best of all, it’s free!) But according to the CDC, 35 percent of adults in the U.S. aren’t getting the recommended seven hours per night. Sleep can help you stay healthy and put you in a better mood, and research suggests it plays a role in workout performance and recovery too — so make sleep part of your self-care routine. 2. Try Lavender for Aromatherapy There’s evidence that the scent of lavender has a relaxing effect and may even improve sleep quality. Either way, it smells amazing — so keep a bottle of lavender oil next to your bed and sprinkle a few drops on your sheets each night to luxuriate in the calming scent. 3. Daydream Daydreaming can get you into trouble at a boring work meeting — but at home, it can be a valuable self-care tool. Doodle, write in a journal, or simply sit in silence and let your mind wander. This is a moment for your brain to rest, recharge, and be creative. 4. Get Moving This doesn’t have to be a workout (although a good sweat sesh definitely counts as self-care, too). You can go for a short hike, walk up and down the stairs, do yoga, take a self-defense course — anything that helps you feel healthier and stronger. 5. Soothe Your Muscles Self-myofascial release can help you relieve tightness and tension in your muscles without the expense of a massage. Try a foam roller to help optimize recovery after a workout, or use a massage ball to knock out a knot in your back. 6. Be Nice to Yourself It’s always nice to hear a compliment — but why wait for someone else to tell you you’re awesome? Set a reminder on your phone or use a positive affirmation app to give yourself a pep talk. 7. Add Gratefulness Gratefulness has been shown to improve your well-being. And there are plenty of simple ways to add gratefulness to your life — start a gratitude journal or create a “ta-da list” to celebrate your accomplishments. 8. Reach Out to Friends Spending time with people you love can be uplifting. Call a long-distance friend you haven’t heard from in a while, or set up a brunch date with that person who makes you laugh ’til you can’t breathe. 9. Pamper Yourself You don’t need a spa day to pamper yourself. Draw up a hot bath with epsom salts or a bath bomb, put on a sheet mask, or slather your skin with your favorite body lotion. 10. Waste Time Wasting time — guilt-free! — is an underrated form of self-care. Allow yourself time to do something completely unproductive: Sit in a coffee shop and people-watch. Watch silly YouTube videos. Kittens, puppies, silly pranks — take your pick. Walk in the grass barefoot. (Just watch out for fire ants!) Color a mandala. Wisdom from the Buddhists on Suffering

Wisdom from the Buddhists on Suffering The  challenges of 2020 have been profound and unprecedented.  I know and am extremely grateful for how fortunate I’ve been to remain well and safe with a secure income this year yet, even so, there are times when the uninvited upheaval to every-day normality has taken a toll.  When I fled London nearly two weeks ago to take refuge for lockdown II, I warmly remembered some wisdom from the Buddhists which brought powerful, positive and productive perspective for the weeks ahead. The wisdom comes in the following metaphor. The Buddhists say that any time we suffer misfortune, two arrows fly our way.… Continue reading… The  challenges of 2020 have been profound and unprecedented. The Benefits Of Self-care

The Benefits Of Self-care In the hustle and bustle of our fast-paced lives, it’s easy to neglect our own well-being. We often prioritize the needs of others and overlook the importance of self-care. However, self-care is not a luxury but a necessity for maintaining our physical, mental, and emotional health. It is the art of intentionally nurturing ourselves, allowing us to recharge, restore balance, and cultivate a positive relationship with our mind, body, and soul. In this blog post, we’ll explore the benefits of self-care and why it should become an integral part of our daily lives. Enhances Overall Well-being: Self-care encompasses a wide range of activities, including exercise, adequate sleep, healthy eating, and relaxation techniques such as meditation or yoga. Engaging in these practices regularly can significantly improve our overall well-being. Taking care of our physical health boosts energy levels, strengthens the immune system, and reduces the risk of chronic illnesses. Simultaneously, nourishing our mental and emotional health through self-care activities helps manage stress, anxiety, and depression, leading to increased happiness and life satisfaction. Increases Resilience: Life is full of challenges and uncertainties, and self-care acts as a buffer against these stressors. Engaging in self-care practices helps us build resilience by fostering self-awareness, self-compassion, and emotional stability. When we prioritize our well-being, we become better equipped to handle adversity and bounce back from setbacks. Self-care empowers us to take control of our lives, make better decisions, and face challenges with a positive mindset. Boosts Productivity and Creativity: Contrary to popular belief, self-care doesn’t equate to laziness or self-indulgence. On the contrary, it fuels our productivity and enhances our creativity. By taking the time to rest, relax, and recharge, we replenish our energy levels and improve our focus and concentration. Engaging in activities that bring us joy, such as pursuing hobbies or spending quality time with loved ones, allows our minds to unwind and rejuvenate. As a result, we return to our tasks with renewed vigour, fresh perspectives, and enhanced problem-solving abilities. Enhances Relationships: Self-care isn’t selfish; it’s an act of self-love and self-respect. By prioritizing our well-being, we become better versions of ourselves, which positively impacts our relationships with others. When we take care of our physical and emotional needs, we can show up fully for our loved ones. Self-care teaches us healthy boundaries, effective communication, and the importance of self-compassion, which enhances our connections and fosters healthier, more fulfilling relationships. Cultivates Mindfulness and Self-Reflection: Self-care practices often involve mindfulness techniques that encourage us to be fully present in the moment and cultivate a deeper connection with ourselves. Whether it’s practicing meditation, journaling, or spending time in nature, these activities allow us to slow down, reflect, and gain clarity. By nurturing our relationship with ourselves, we develop a better understanding of our needs, desires, and values. This self-awareness empowers us to make choices aligned with our authentic selves, leading to a more fulfilling and purposeful life. In a world that constantly demands our attention and energy, self-care is a vital tool for maintaining our well-being and finding balance amidst the chaos. By prioritizing self-care, we invest in our physical, mental, and emotional health, ultimately leading to a happier, more fulfilled life. Embrace the benefits of self-care today and witness the transformative effects it can have on your mind, body, and soul. Self-care is a deeply personal practice that varies greatly from person to person. While the concept of self-care encompasses activities aimed at nurturing one’s physical, mental, and emotional well-being, the ways in which individuals engage in self-care can be as unique as they are. Here are some of the ways in which you can practice self-care: Engage in activities that bring you joy and relaxation, such as reading, taking walks in nature, listening to music, or practicing a hobby. Prioritise your physical health by getting regular exercise, eating nourishing meals, and getting enough sleep. Practice mindfulness and meditation to calm your mind and reduce stress. Establish healthy boundaries by learning to say no when necessary and protecting your time and energy. Disconnect from technology and take breaks from screens to recharge and avoid information overload. Engage in activities that promote personal growth and self-reflection, such as journaling or therapy. Check out our infographic for more information on the benefits of self-care!
